The first comment seems to be from a person who is jealous of Ms. Winfrey's wealth. He has a problem with one entertainment personality getting recognition (Oprah) but doesn't seem to be bothered by another entertainment figure (Hepburn). This guy has some serious issue. In any case, these people are all influential and important to our society.

Oprah is awesome cause she is the only black person who would ever be called an American icon besides Martin Luther King Jr. Its not because she has done anything super important for our society but because she shows the freedom and capitalist part of American society that says ANYONE can be rich. The poorest trash can become the most wealthy CEO. The biggest idiot in the class can become a millionaire football player. Oprah worked her butt off and didnt have to steal anything unlike Bill Gates. I do give him his pops though cause hes the richest thief in the world. Right on Oprah!!

All of them are great people, and have done multiple Fantastic Things. Neil Armstrong, Lance Armstrong, and Oprah should all be looked up to as icons, but thats just my opinion

I agree with the second commet, but If you want an "AMERICAN ICON" then your going to have to give us a bettter list to pick from. These people done great for themselves, but what about Mr. Bill Gate, who gave us a product that the world can profit from, or Thomas Edison with his invention of light, Benjamin Franklin with electricty and the decoration of independance or the rest for that matter.

I only wish that Oprah could be more than one person. She is a family Idol to us. I think if she could hear the stories that Americans can tell about how they have been treated by others and by the government, it would be of interest to her ears, and then she would make it "important" to the rest of us. There are so many stories that need to be told and we depend on Oprah to let us see that we are not the only ones with sad stories that need to be told (exposed). We love her and respect her.

I am sure it was not easy to come out with a list of 10 great Americans who can truly be called American Icons. I am not an American but I do know the qualifications to be called iconic. Indeed, Oprah Winfrey is undeniably an American icon. She is what she is today through her own steam, her own hard work, her own capabilities - plus that X factor. She represents modern America in the 21st century where race and colour are blind in the people's regard and respect for what constitutes that great American. And yes... I thought Bill Gates should be included.
