John McCain

John McCain has spent his life serving his country. A 22-year Navy veteran, he served in Vietnam and spent time as a prisoner of war. He was a two term member of Congress and has represented Arizona in the U.S. Senate since 1986. Now, he wants to be president. Scott Pelley profiles John McCain on the campaign trail, and has an exclusive look at McCain's controversial tour of a Baghdad market.

I had some respect for you, thinking you were an honorable person until watching your 60 minutes debacle and realizing that you are just another lying untrustworthy politician. You may have been tortured in vietnam, probably more lies, The office of president surely doesn't need another lying, unethical person holding the office, so hopefully you nor your republican cronies will get elected.

What a shame, or sham whichever way you look at this report. Mr. Pelley forgot to mention that those troops, one of them my Son, whom Pelley interviewed for the segment but chose not to use was mislead into believing that pelley was not only doing a story on McCain but on the troops there with him. My son was excited when he called his mother from Iraq and said he had been intervied for the story. This is his second tour as a Combat Medic. Instead of telling a story which could have portraid our troops in a positive light Mr. Pelley chose to use it as a way to attack McCain. I could care less about McCains visit yet the fact that my Son protected and trusted you on your visit with McCain to portray the troops in a positive light leaves me very bitter towards you and 60 Minutes. You still have the footage how about a story about what our troops have to go through to protect the Journalist.

What a lousy report, what a sorry excuse for a reporter is this Pelley. It was so obvious that he was only interested in discrediting Senator McCain and if he could discredit the President at the same time so much the better. We shouldn’t be surprise by the response from the mother of a soldier. Pelley misled the troop? Why are you surprise? They probably related positive things that Pelley wouldn’t or couldn’t if he was to tow the CBS line about how bad things are, how wrong McCain is for supporting President and the troops. The only problem I have with McCain is why he agreed to even talk to this bozo; and why he didn’t put Pelley in his place. I haven’t been watching 60 minutes because of this slanted approach – I watched this one because I was curious to see if you would give any credence to what the senator was saying. NoWay, that was pretty obvious. Ed Laplante North Attleboro, Ma

We members of PRO-LEGAL (PEACEFUL, RESPONSIBLE, OBEYING LEGAL IMMIGRANTS) will never forget the bill you co-sponsored with Sen. Kennedy, giving amnesty to violators of our US IMMIGRATION LAWS. You are sending a wrong signal to younger generation and LAW ABIDING US Citizens and Legal Residents, that it pays to cheat, abuse, sneak, mock our US IMMIGRATION LAWS, EDUCATION, HEALTHCARE (MEDICAL/DENTAL), PUBLIC SERVICES, SOCIAL SECURITY SYSTEM, JUSTICE SYSTEM and others. NO ONE'S ABOVE THE LAW OR BELOW THE LAW. IF YOU VIOLATED A LAW, YOU COMMITTED A CRIME. IF YOU COMMITTED A CRIME, YOUR A CRIMINAL. THEN WHY REWARD THEM, (VIOLATORS OF OUR US IMMIGRATION LAWS? ARE THEY SACRED COWS AND UNTOUCHABLES? THE PEOPLE WHO SHOULD BE GIVEN PRIORITY TO COME HERE A PEOPLE WHO ARE NEXT IN LINE (THEIR PRIORITY DATES ARE DUE ALREADY). INSTEAD GIVING AMNESTY TO ALLEGEDLY 12-20 MILLIONS ILLEGALS, UNDOCUMENTED, UNAUTHORIZED FOREIGN NATIONAL, OVERSTAYING VIOLATORS OF OUR US IMMIGRATION LAWS, WHY NOT EXPEDIT THE 12-20 MILLION WHO ARE NEXT IN LINE WHO UNDERGO THE LEGAL WAY/PROCESS TO COME HERE? THOSE VIOLATORS SHOULD BE TAUGHT HOW TO RESPECT AND OBEY OUR LAWS AND SYSTEMS TO COME HERE. THEY SHOULD FALL IN LINE LIKE THE MILLION INDIVIDUALS WHO ARE WAITING FOR THERE PETITION TO BE NEXT TO BE PROCESSED. INSTEAD GIVING TEETH TO OUR EXISTING US IMMIGRATION LAWS, WHY TRY TO PASS A BILL TO CIRCUMVENT OUR EXISTING US IMMIGRATION LAWS? THAT'S WHY GOP (REPUBLICAN PARTY) LOST IN THE LAST MID-TERM ELECTION BECAUSE YOU TRY TO PLEASE THEM AT THE EXPENSE OF LAW ABIDING US CITIZENS AND LEGAL RESIDENTS. PRESENTLY WE ARE EXPERIENCING THE INFLUX OF MILLIONS OF ILLEGALS THANKS TO THE PRESENT GOVERNMENT WHO EVEN SUPPORTED A DRUG DEALER FROM MEXICO LEAVING OUR TWO BORDER PATROL AGENT IN JAIL. WORSE, IN ANOTHER SITUATION A DEPUTY SHERIFF WAS EVEN JAILED FOR DOING HIS DUTY. THE 75 MILLION STRONG NETWORK OF PRO-LEGAL WOULD ONLY SUPPORT TOM TANCREDO OR DUNCAN HUNTER IN 2008. NO TO SCAMNESTY!!!!! DEPORT NOW ALL VIOLATORS OF OUR US IMMIGARTION LAWS!!!!!

GRTWALL3 - what a dumb post. Mcain said in the interview that he supports the surge despite the polls saying that the American people want the war to be over and that he'd rather lose the election than lose the war. He admits to "worse than waffling" because of "ambition" in the 2000 election. This is evidence of not saying things just to get elected and not spinning the truth like the average politician would. It was a refreshing and brutally honest politician interview for a change. You are so blinded by ideology.

I am really curious about how Mr. McCain can really expect us to believe that things are getting better while they are standing there with Kevlar bullet proof vests on. The 'elephant' in the room is that we are in a war with no way out and no end in sight. Where the hell is Osama bin Laden? Remember him? I do!

I don't think I have less confidence in McCain as much as I have an increased awareness of how the next year of campaigning (for everyone) is going to play out. Obviously McCain is trying to buttress his argument, trying to say and do the right things for his campaign and the GOP while struggling to reconcile them with facts and his own conscience. Overall not a bad job, but there is an overarching uneasiness to the report, a conflict in McCain because he knows (and we know) that whatever happens next in Iraq will be a gamble. As president, he would have power and maybe power is simply what he wants, but the burden of responsibility on the next president will be tremendous and he or she should be prepared and willing to do some serious service and I still regard McCain as one of the best candidates. However, I also agree with the parent above me (#3) in that our forces are summoned on too much by journalists and politicians, out for power or Pulitzers. As much as I support the power of the press, I think their reports and images are only confusing the situation in Iraq.

I was one that supported McCain in the 2000 race......I despised Bush & Co for what they did to him......but I have lost all respect for this man since he''s been kissing Bush's ass and courting the radical righties! McCain is/was a conservative but he was NEVER a neo-con but is trying to be one just to get votes.........He lost my vote as well as any respect that I had for the man. ....he also lost all moderates and independants......those are the ones that he should have been concerned with not the neo-cons and/or the radical righties Chuck Hagel will get my vote if he decides to run!
