The Science of Sleep

Tired of being tired? You're not alone. On average, Americans say they get less than seven hours of sleep each night. Still, we spend nearly one-third of our lives asleep, so it's not surprising that a great many researchers are exploring its many mysteries. What is surprising, however, is the new evidence about sleep's impact on health, aging, memory and even sex! Lesley Stahl reports.

Perhaps via meditation we can gain lost sleep time in a short time frame. There should be laws that protect employees and enforcement is needed. In many fields, employers make non union employees work in the nights often without giving time to rest; truck drivers, computer programmers, some retail stores employees are some examples. As we saw, sleep deprivation caused many serious accidents, in addition it contributed to serious health problems. As we learn, we should ammend our employment laws.

Stop with the ads after every clip! You want to know why you are losing so much money and getting hostile takeover bids Yahoo! It's because you take our custom for granted. The ad may run x number of times, most move on and close the browser down. If it is a segment I want to see, I do something else, mute them then get out as quickly as I can. You are hurting yourselves immeasurably, 30-second ads after a 75-second clip, even MSNBC gives one 10 minutes or more between them. There is no way I would ever use these products and will in fact go out of my way to make sure I and everyone else I know avoids them and maybe that's the only way you get the message, people voting with their feet and boycotting these products, most of which one cannot even acquire overseas! Stop the insanity! I hope your advertisers see how abusive you have become as most will not put up with this!

I couldn't agree more with this last comment. I wanted to watch the videos, but it's definitely not worth it to sit through all the crap and commercials, so I just close the page. Yahoo is defeating their own purpose. I can look up sleep disorders and information, news events, etc on a million other web pages that don't have commercials. And you can be sure I will. I will NOT watch them here. yahoo deserves to fall flat on their face for this crap.

I completely agree with the last two comments. Therefore, I'd rather wait for the USA Today and read the news. I hope someone pays attention to this problem.

I am in agreement with the information regarding the sleep studies. The health risk of diabetes, accidents due to lack of sleep, aging sooner because not enough deep sleep. All has an effect on the brain and the human body. I am glad to see the studies done to prove how our living styles and habits are all related to sleep.

This is my life. I have been exhausted with memory and concentration problems since my teens. I was tested for many things, and like many women, was told my problem was depression. After doing my own research, I requested a sleep study. The diagnosis was severe sleep apnea, unusual for a 39 woman who worked out regularly and was overweight (size 14), but not morbidly obese. Sleep deprivation has a devastating affect on your quality of life. If you have the symptoms, request a sleep study even if your doctor(s) does not think you fit the profile.

Sleep apnea almost killed me. Its a very serious disease and should not be taken lightly by anyone that displays the symptoms. Get help! My heart was affected, I'm a type2 diabetic and now taking blood pressure meds.
